High School Teacher Award Application    Middle School Teacher Award Application

THE PROGRAM

The Junior Division of the Missouri Academy of Science has since 1976 presented the Outstanding Science Teacher Award to enhance the prestige of secondary school teachers.  In 1991, this award program was expanded to include one outstanding high school teacher and one outstanding middle school teacher.  Teacher can be nominated within their district by their administrators, fellow teachers or students.  Each Junior Division MAS district may nominate one high school and one middle school outstanding teacher nominee.

ELIGIBILITY

Any high school (grades 9-12) or middle school (grades 6-8) teacher who is a Missouri Academy member in good standing is eligible for the award.  No minimal length of service is required.  All nominations must be made by an administrator such as the department head, principal or superintendent, etc., to be considered.  Peers, parents, or students may initiate the process through an administrator.

NOMINATIONS

Nomination forms must be completed fully for each candidate.  Judges will give additional weight to accompanying letters of recommendations from former students and colleagues.  All nominations from the districts should be submitted to the State Director by April 1st.

JUDGING

The award shall be made on the basis of innovative teaching approaches, and student development and growth.  All applications will have preliminary screening at the District level by a professional panel established by the District Director.  Each district will submit no more than one outstanding teacher candidate to the State Director by April 1st.  A state committee will make the final choices.  The Selection Committee will consider the following evidence in making their choice of outstanding teacher:

  1. Excellence in teaching science, especially in fostering science investigations.

  2. Dedication to science instruction.

  3. Commitment and success in developing student interest in science and the practice of science for humanitarian goals.

  4. A commitment to the student as a total human being.

All applications and evaluations are held in strict confidence and will be destroyed at the end of the selection and award process.
